Dear Colleagues,

As you may know, Sali Farhan and I are gathering information and identifying interested groups to
see whom at The Neuro would be interested in a Neuro-wide DRAC (Digital Research Alliance of
Canada AKA Compute Canada) platform and portal application. We are coordinating all
Neuro applications, to make it as strong as possible.

At this stage we are still gathering information on who is interested in participating, what their
current and future storage needs are, and what financial support they currently have to do that
work.

Some of you have already contributed and added some information to our spreadsheet:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/19HV0Z85WYkp-Bu1BhqiHUwWny4NBpVnCIuRDYlHZJsQ/edit#gid=0

And I recently corresponded with Sylvain Milot who suggested I should write to this list, to make sure
we had all interested parties. At this stage do not worry (too much) about "double dipping” (say Sylvain
added numbers, and your numbers are part of those numbers), but do indicate where your storage is,
so I can de-convolute all of the BIC storage (for example).

This Neuro-wide DRAC application will be for all types of data: imaging, genomics, clinical, physiological,
human, other organisms, etc.

Even if you have already contributed to the spreadsheet, please re-evaluate and complete added
columns (e.g. about grants).

Also a good idea to include people in your group that could help to complete some of the information
in the table. We will follow up with specific people if we have additional information we need.

I will also share a timetable for all of this. The call for application is not out yet, but we expect
it early this fall, and we want to be ready ahead of time for a very strong application that we
will get reviewed internally by friendly reviewers.

Please do not hesitate to contact Sali or I if you have any questions.

Thank you ahead of time for your contribution.

@bffo

Subject: The Neuro Bioinformatics Core's Application for the Compute Canada Research Platforms and Portals Competition

Hi all,

I hope you're all well,

As you know the data we produce at The Neuro continues to grow and we need to expand our storage and computing capabilities accordingly.

We plan to apply for the Compute Canada Research Platforms and Portals Competition, which will be available this fall. More information can be found here though this is last year's info and things may change: https://www.computecanada.ca/research-portal/accessing-resources/resource-allocation-competitions/rpp/

We would like to make sure we are well prepared and fully understand The Neuro's growing data storage and processing needs. An important element is whether this should also be a larger Neuro application and include our imaging and informatics colleagues, which will substantially elevate our success rate but we'll need to work out some of the application details accordingly i.e. who the PI is, co-PIs, etc.

What we need from you is:
1) Are you interested in the bioinformatics core to store and manage your data or do you prefer to manage and store your own data on your own Compute Canada PI account? (You can keep your account and also store your data with us).

2) How much data do you plan on generating from April 2023-March 2024, and what do you prefer to archive - i.e. raw only vs raw + large processed files (esp alignments).

Please feel free to forward this to any or all Neuro PIs generating big data (genomics or transcriptomics), I just included our current users.

Many thanks for your collaboration,
Sali
