Thank you, Annette & others who have echoed her call for further discussing implications.
And thank you for these good questions, Casey -
1. We did not conduct a latent class analysis but rather a latent class growth analysis (related to an LPA, but allows for our three time points) ([?pdf icon] 00_Jung_et_al-2008-Social_and_Personality_Psychology_Compass.pdf<https://livejohnshopkins-my.sharepoint.com/:b:/g/personal/igorski1_jh_edu/EalOR1wdgvhPlE_zjWHbdC0BO6BsMDQonMjMYLzdSJ-Nfw?e=F0YAm8>).
2. We adjusted for income as well as race/ethnicity as some of our a priori confounders in our models and reported the adjusted effect estimates in the abstract (moved now to the figure).
3. That is another strategy we have considered, but have not utilized yet due to the complications you're getting at. We have pivoted for now, for the full project but not for this abstract, to more intricately evaluating the association between air pollution and brain volume (e.g., with distributed lag models looking at exposure windows over pregnancy), before we bring back ASD into the equation.
I have attached a new version of the abstract (v3) addressing the comments thus far. Note: to make room for new words (limit = 300), I've moved some content to a figure (allowed/optional though potentially "cheating" by including words in the figure).
Best,
Irena

Hi Irena, Heather and crew,
This is fantastic - very interesting use of this data, and interesting to see the air pollution data contributing to brain volume growth. I had a few questions/comments - this would pertain more to the full project as you are writing it up.
-Why did you conduct a latent class analysis, rather than modeling growth over time across the full sample? It seems like it would be simpler to start by modeling individuals' growth over time, and then predict that with your covariates of interest. Especially when the LPA suggested a "low", "medium" and "high" group - to me that's saying that it might be better to model it continuously.
-Did income and/or race/ethnicity covary with air pollution? How does including that impact your results?
-If you do end up with the LPA model, would it make sense to consider a mediation approach where air pollution --> brain growth --> ASD outcome? To me that conceptually fits with the model you're proposing. But it also sounds very complicated to model...
Really interesting work!
Casey

This is great! So happy to see the outcomes of this data collection effort. One thought - if you have the words available, it would be good to further discuss the implications of these findings, rather than stopping at "this contrasts with observations of brain enlargement....".
Thanks for your work on this!! Annette

Dear Colleagues,
Heather Volk's team has an abstract for ISEE NAC describing analyses of pollution data in relation to brain volumes.
Please see attached and provide and feedback to Irena, the first author (copied here), by 11/29.
If you would like to be included as an author, please let her know.
Thank you,
Jessica
