Well I run 32bit at home.

Very "interesting"... Is your video card a radeon based ATI perchance?
There are some unresolved issues with these that have bitten me too.
If so perhaps try adding this to your xorg.conf:

   Option "AccelMethod"	"xaa"

In the Device section.
