Image-guided Intervention Research at Robarts
Dr. Terry Peters and Dr. Maged Goubran, Robarts Research Institute, Western University

Tuesday, November 11, 2:30pm
McConnell Engineering, Room 437

The VASST Lab at Robarts (Virtual Augmentation for Surgical Simulation and Therapy) supports a range of projects in various organ systems to achieve therapeutic intervention while performing a minimum of surgery. Through the use of image processing, registered imaging, instrument tracking, and novel visualization, we have developed a number of platforms for image-guided procedures in the heart, spine, prostate, and brain. The first half of the talk will deal with an overview of several different applications in the lab, while the second part will describe our recent work dealing with the acquisition of meaningful histological data from neurological MR images.

Multi-Modal MRI-based Deep Brain Stimulator Neurosurgery
Dr. Bruce Pike, University of Calgary

Tuesday, November 11, 3:30pm
McConnell Engineering, Room 437

ABSTRACT:
The implantation of stimulators deep within the brain has become an important surgical approach to the treatment of movement disorders such as essential tremor and Parkinson's Disease. Planning and execution of this procedure relies upon image guided neurosurgical techniques that can be labour intensive. In this presentation I will present a computer-assisted trajectory planning system that was developed within the context of DBS image guided neurosurgery. The general system architecture will be reviewed and results of a retrospective analysis evaluation of the system will be presented.
