SEMINAR ANNOUNCEMENT

April 14, 2011 - 9:30AM in de Grandpré Conference Room

Speaker: Deda Gillespie, Assistant Professor, McMaster University

Title: Developmental refinement of converging excitatory and inhibitory maps in auditory brainstem.

Abstract: How converging topographic maps are established and refined is a major question for developmental systems neuroscience. This question is of particular interest in the lateral superior olive (LSO) of the auditory brainstem, where the converging inputs are of opposite sign. I will discuss recent work in the lab addressed at understanding the role of glutamate release in developmental plasticity of inhibitory inputs to the LSO, transient developmental expression of the calcium-sensing protein Synaptotagmin 1 at these glutamate-releasing immature inhibitory synapses, and evidence for glutamate spillover and crosstalk between immature excitatory and inhibitory synapses in the LSO.

Host: Ed Ruthazer (x4022)
