Hi all,

I'm writing to give you an update on the BIC web page. This email is a
bit long, but I've tried to compress all the necessary information into a
single email.

As you may know our old web page was antiquated and its replacement, while
better looking, was no easier to use. One of my PhD students, Marta
Kersten, has been working on transferring our Bic Web Page from a hard to
use, hard to maintain database-based web page to a hopefully easier to
maintain, user-driven, wiki-based web page. Our aim is to have a living
web document that we can populate with content and keep up to date. By
using a wiki, many people (with the appropriate permissions) will be able
to edit content. Our goal is to have
	- 2-3 key people maintain the main pages of the web site
	- one person per lab that will control a lab's web pages, and
	- users (i.e., students/fellows) can edit and maintain the majority of
individual pages that describe their work.
The public will be able to see (but not edit) the content.

My lab tested completed alpha testing in April. The labs of Bruce, Alan
and Alain completed beta testing in May and June. Overall, the response
(and the result) has been quite good. Information has been put in to
describe our labs, the people in the labs and each of the students/fellows
have updated their pages. Most of the kinks have been worked out, and
Marta has made the required changes to the wiki. To get an idea of what
is possible, have a look at:
	The bic home page: http://noodles.bic.mni.mcgill.ca
	My lab's home page: http://noodles.bic.mni.mcgill.ca/ResearchLabsIPL/HomePage
	My BIC home page: http://noodles.bic.mni.mcgill.ca/PeopleFaculty/CollinsDLouis
	My personal home page:	http://noodles.bic.mni.mcgill.ca/PersonalCollinsdlouis/HomePage
Play around on the site to get feel for what is there. Marta transferred as
much of the information from www.bic.mni.mcgill.ca as possible. I'm sure
that you will notice information that is incorrect.

Over the coming weeks (end of June and July), I would like you and your
colleagues to play with the system to add more content - specifically for
the pages that concern you. The wiki is really quite friendly - it is
easy to enter content and keep it up to date. Once this is done, we will
open the site to public viewing.

See below for instructions on how to get started.

Please don't hesitate to contact me or Marta if you have any questions,

-Louis

BIC WIKI INSTRUCTIONS

So here is how to proceed. First, the web site homepage address: http://noodles.bic.mni.mcgill.ca

You'll note that the wiki-based web site has a similar 'look and feel' as
the new website. Begin by poking around to see the structure. There is a
site menu/map on the left, news elements on the right and the main page in
the middle.

Next, look at the 'People' pages by clicking on the menu on the left.
Click next on either 'Students', 'Postdocs', 'Staff' or 'Faculty'
depending on your affiliation.

The table/list that appears is automagically generated. (Marta is looking
at better ways to format these tables). The columns have name, title,
personal website and email entries for each person. If you click on your
name, then you'll come to your 'official personal web page'. The data on
the 'official personal web page' is stored in a database. The goal here is
to have a similar 'look and feel' for all individuals in the web site. Be
patient, below I'll tell you where you get to be creative. The text on
this page is editable with a form by clicking on the red 'Edit' that is on
the left, below the text of the page. You'll need to be able to login to
edit your data. Marta has written a tutorial
http://noodles.bic.mni.mcgill.ca/Tutorial/Tutorial to instruct you on
logging in, editing content and creating new content. If you don't have a
wiki login/password you'll need to email Marta as instructed in the
tutorial.

So, your first assignment is to update the text in this form so that you
accurately describe who you are and what you do in a short paragraph. You
can make sure that the other information is correct (email address,
telephone and fax numbers, etc... Note that the website field (if filled
in) points back to the www.bic.mni.mcgill.ca/~username page on the old
website. You can leave this like it is or change it to point to your own
(non-official) personal website on any other system, or you can point to
your new customized non-official web site that you will create (see next
paragraph).

Feeling creative? Marta has instructions for creating new pages in the
tutorial, including customized personal pages. For your second
assignment, follow the instructions in the tutorial and create a custom
personal web page to describe whatever you like: your research, your
publications, your favorite color, your favorite food and the name of your
dog.

We are very much interested in having comments. Please let Marta or I
know what you think.

Good luck and have fun!

-Louis
