On January 9, 2007, the Killam Lecture, entitled "Regenerative Medicine
Based on Muscle Derived Stem Cells" will be delivered by Dr.Johnny
Huard who is an alumnus of the MNI. He hails from the Gaspe and obtained
his PhD in the field of myoblast transfer for dystrophin deficiency at
Laval University in 1993 under Jacques Tremblay. He has done post
doctorate work in the field of gene and cell therapy in 1993-1994 at the
MNI under George Karpati. Later he worked on herpes simplex
virus-mediated gene therapy with Joe Glorioso in Pittsburgh. In 1996, he
was appointed at the Orthopedics Department in the Children's Hospital
of the University of Pittsburgh (PCH) as an Assistant Professor.
Currently, he is tenured Associate Professor in the Departments of
Orthopedic Surgery, Molecular Genetics & Biochemistry & Bioengineering.
He is Director of the Growth and Development Laboratory at the PCH. He
also holds the title of Henry J Mankin Endowed Chair in Orthopedic
Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh.
Dr. Huard has done outstanding research in the field of cell therapy
(including myogenic stem cells) for genetic muscle diseases,
particularly dystrophin deficiency. He also worked in the same field
for bone biology. He has obtained generous financial support from NIH
and MDA and other agencies.. As a result of his prolific research, since
1991 he has published 145 peer-reviewed articles, as well as 55 reviews
and book chapters. He has been a busy visiting lecturer and acquired a
prestigious international status in the field of cell therapy. In his
Killam Lecture he is going to share with us his insight regarding the
current status of cell therapy as a means of regenerative medicine. To
attest to his busy and efficient scientific carrier, his Curriculum
Vitae extends over 89 pages.
