Hello,
Just to follow-up on the template questions we were discussing today.
My choice to normalize using the EPI template (vs. T1) was based on both
personal experience and the idea that normalize an image to another one
that is closer in image intensity and contrast distributions. I also ran
across this back when I was contemplating what course of action to take -
http://www.fil.ion.ucl.ac.uk/spm/course/slides05-usa/pdf/Lab_D_RegAlts.pdf

In my prior studies (across 3 different scanners) we faced lots of issues
with normalization using the T1 images, regardless of where the data were
acquired.
So we switched to using EPI templates and it seemed to yield better
normalization.

I don't have a specific statistic/metric that we used to determine what was
'better' but instead looked a the individual subject GLMs and
Group level PLS to see if the t-statistics or spatial extents were
impacted.

I'd love to learn a more objective way to decide what the 'best'
normalization is since my lab is currently re-analyzing our data (from a
different study)
using multiple parallel normalization routines to try to find what works
best when you have sig. subject motion
(But again we are defining best as 'yields more sig results in
theoretically relevant ROIs'')
We are also exploring study-specific EPI templates since
Hsu et al. 2007 suggest that was optimal for their data.

I'd be happy to present what we find based on our various normalization
approaches in Fall 2015 to the group.
Cheers,
Natasha
