I am certain that this is a GLUT/freeglut problem and thus could be a
video card issue. In the later versions of GLUT that come with Ubuntu
I have seen this, I haven't yet found a solution that works in all
cases.

So, if you are using HW graphics acceleration in the VM, I'd recommend
trying emulation and if not vice versa!

I am keen to find a comprehensive fix for this but don't have enough
consistent error reports on it yet.
