Yes, it looks like the netcdf install procedure is broken.  You
need to run "ranlib" after copying the newly-built library, see:
http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Darwin/Reference/ManPages/html/libtool.1.html
(the BUGS section implies it is just a warning, but your experience
suggests that it is actually a fatal error).
