Abstract: Memory retrieval is widely recognized as a dynamic process, resulting in variations in how individuals recall past experiences. Cognitive neuroscience models of memory propose that distinct hippocampal circuits represent memories either with broad, conceptual elements or with precise, perceptual details. This presentation will outline a series of behavioral and neuroimaging studies that utilize these models to examine memory differences associated with aging and mental health conditions, such as anxiety. The findings demonstrate that different populations—such as younger versus older adults and individuals with anxiety—tend to favor specific types of memory representation, as reflected in both behavior and brain activity. Additionally, the results highlight how these representational biases influence the use of memory to guide decision-making and future planning. The presentation will conclude with a discussion on the implications of these findings for neurocognitive models of aging and therapeutic interventions for mental health.

The Feindel Seminar Series at The Neuro
Advances the vision of Dr. William Feindel (1918–2014), Former Director of the Neuro (1972–1984), to constantly bridge the clinical and research realms. The talks will highlight the latest advances and discoveries in neuropsychology, cognitive neuroscience, and neuroimaging.

Speakers will include scientists from across The Neuro, as well as colleagues and collaborators locally and from around the world. The series is intended to provide a virtual forum for scientists and trainees to continue to foster interdisciplinary exchanges on the mechanisms, diagnosis and treatment of brain and cognitive disorders.
