Abstract: The hippocampus plays a critical role in the formation of episodic memories. Additionally, it is often the site of seizure generation in temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). As such, considerable research has examined the role of hippocampal integrity in memory impairments in TLE. However, the hippocampus also connects to a broad set of cortical regions throughout the brain (often referred to as the default mode network or DMN) which may be critical for forming and retrieving memories. In this talk, I discuss how the hippocampus interacts with this network of regions in service of episodic memory formation, how this network is altered in TLE, and how these alterations relate to memory ability in patients. I discuss a potential role for the DMN in episodic representations and outline future work employing naturalistic stimuli--stimuli that depict complex narrative events--to better understand episodic memory and hippocampal-cortical functioning in TLE. Overall, my talk will integrate neuroimaging techniques, cognitive neuroscience, clinical psychology, and cognitive psychology to understand the functioning of hippocampal-cortical networks in TLE and the healthy brain

Bio: Alexander Barnett completed his B.Sc., M.A. and Ph.D. at the University of Toronto. Before returning to the University of Toronto as faculty in the Department of Psychology, he was a Postdoctoral Scholar at the University of California, at Davis. Alexander Barnett’s research incorporates elements of systems neuroscience, cognitive psychology, and clinical neuropsychology in creative ways to expand our understanding of episodic memory. His research explores how neocortical networks in the brain interact with the hippocampus to support the formation, retrieval, and transformation of episodic memories. He is interested in applying this knowledge to examine how alterations in network communication impact memory in populations with memory impairment such as temporal lobe epilepsy.

*Alexander Barnett is a candidate for a tenure-track faculty position in the Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery.
