*Never before have we had as ready access to information as in today’s
“on-line” world. Unfortunately, we also have to contend with the flood of
misinformation that threatens to overwhelm us. In response, the McGill
Office for Science and Society was established to disseminate sound science
with a mandate of separating sense from nonsense. As Director of the
Office, I have experienced various adventures in the battle against
pseudoscience, some amusing, and some more serious. Also, being on one end
of a radio microphone and in front of television cameras for over forty
years has provided fascinating insight into the public’s perception of
science and has afforded an opportunity to foster critical thinking and
help people distinguish fact from fancy.*

Joe Schwarcz is Director of McGill University’s “Office for Science and
Society” which has the mission of separating sense from nonsense. He is the
recipient of numerous awards for teaching chemistry and for interpreting
science for the public. “Dr Joe” has hosted a radio show on science for
forty years, has appeared hundreds of times on television, writes a regular
newspaper column and is the author of eighteen best-sellers. He has been
awarded honorary degrees by Athabasca University, Cape Breton University,
the University of Windsor and Simon Fraser University. Professor Schwarcz
is also an amateur magician and often spices up his presentations with a
little magic.
