It is with great sadness that we announce the passing away of Christian Barillot, a distinguished researcher and active member of the MICCAI Society. Professor Barillot was a MICCAI Fellow, General Chair of the MICCAI 2004, conference, and Program Co-Chair of the MICCAI 2013 and 2014.

Professor Barillot was born in France in 1959. He obtained his Ph.D. thesis from the University of Rennes I on “Information Processing” in 1984 and "Habilitation" thesis in Computer Sciences in 1999. He was appointed as a tenured Researcher in 1986 from the CNRS (National Center of Scientific Research). In 1987, 1988 and again partially in 1991, he was a Research Fellow at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, USA. and worked where he collaborated with Professor R.A. Robb. Between 1988 and 1996 he worked at the SIM Laboratory and the INSERM U335 unit at the University of Rennes I, France. In 2003, he was a Visiting Professor at the Robarts Research Institute, U. of Western Ontario, Canada collaborating with Professors Terry Peters and Aaron Fenster.

He joined IRISA in 1996/ Since 2004, he was the Scientific Leader of the VisAGeS U1228 research Unit, the director of the Neurinfo imaging platform since 2010. He was a member of the scientific committee of the CNRS Institute for Information Sciences and Technologies (INS2I), and the Chairman of the scientific committee between 2015 and 2018.

His contributions to the field of Medical Image processing are numerous. They include the processing of multidimensional medical images, including the integration and fusion of medical images and their applications in brain pathologies., He was an associate editor of IEEE Trans. Med. Medical Imaging and Medical Image Analysis.
