Where does Parkinson’s disease begin -- the gut, the brain, or both.

Abstract:

It has been hypothesized that the first pathology in Parkinson’s disease may originate in the enteric nervous system, and spread via the autonomic connectome to the brain. However, not all evidence seems to be compatible with this hypothesis. In this talk, I will present the hypothesis that Parkinson’s disease may consist of two types: a gut-first subtype, where the pathology originates in the enteric nervous system with secondary involvement of the brain, and a brain-first subtype with secondary involvement of the peripheral nervous system. The hypothesis is supported by data from post mortem neuropathology data and by ongoing multi-modality imaging studies from our lab.
