The Role of MRI in Parkinson's Disease

The hallmark of Parkinson's disease is the degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta. Histological studies have also shown degeneration at several different levels of the brain. Modern MRI approaches have allowed detecting changes in these regions in patients with Parkinson's disease. This presentation will review recent advances in MRI biomarker research in Parkinson's disease and their use to study brainstem and basal forebrain lesions in Parkinson's disease in relation to clinical symptoms.

Assessing Brain Health

It can be postulated without difficulty that cognitive function is directly related to brain health; likewise, that future brain health status is based both on its current condition as well as on the on-going effects of genetic and environmental factors. I will propose a mechanistic concept of brain health, operationalized via measurable proxies of major organ-level brain systems that support cognitive function, and demonstrated its applicability towards the prediction of cognitive decline in the context of aging and probable Alzheimer's disease.
