Dear all,

Over the past few months there has been increasing demand to use the now defunct 1.5T Sonata as a mock MRI scanner for training participants, filming, and other purposes. Although the system can no longer acquire images, Siemens has helped us to preserve functions such as motorized table transport, lighting, ventilation, and intercom. The magnetic field is permanently down, permitting the use of ferromagnetic equipment in training or filming sessions.

The general booking rate for the mock scanner is $50/hour, which helps to cover staffing and upkeep of the magnet bay for this purpose. When users wish to book time on the Sonata to train participants immediately prior to a paid 3T session, we will offer up to 30 minutes of mock scanner time at no charge. Otherwise, use of the Sonata is charged at the rate indicated above.

Please note that it is mandatory for anyone wishing to use the Sonata to make a reservation, through Judy, using the normal booking mechanism. This is to avoid scheduling conflicts and track the use of assets in accordance with McGill policy.

In the longer term (>18 months), it is likely that the Sonata will be replaced with a new MRI system. We nevertheless encourage researchers to make use of the Sonata while available, as it provides a very realistic simulation environment and helps acquaint participants with the general location of the MRI Unit. If we can document usage now, it will help to plan and allocate future resources to preserve some kind of mock scanner capability, for general use, after the Sonata is removed.

Should you have further questions, please don't hesitate to contact any member of the MRI Unit.

Best regards,

Rick
