Dr. Thompson was a Professor in the Medical Physics Unit of the Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery, and in the Department of Biomedical Engineering. He served as Director of the Montreal Neurological Institute's Research Computing Laboratory from 1980 until his retirement in 2007.
Born in New Zealand, Dr. Thompson received his B.Sc. (1964), his M.Sc. (1965) and his D.Sc. (1987) from Otago University. Dr. Thompson was a pioneer in the development of PET. He was the first to use a PET technique involving a special type of crystal that became a world standard. In the last several years, he has developed a portable PET scanner designed for mammography. This instrument is an alternative and economical way to detect cancer in women. It can also be used in experimental research. During his career, Dr. Thompson published nearly 100 peer- reviewed papers and holds 10 patents related to PET imaging. He supervised 24 Master's and Ph.D. students, most of whom have gone on to work in imaging technology development or as medical physicists. In 2008, Dr. Thompson was awarded the Edward J.
