Ultra high-field MRI of the human brain promises increases in anatomical contrast and functional sensitivity. However, it also poses challenges to tackle to fully exploit its potential. In this talk, I will present theoretical estimations and experimental examples of image quality at 7 Tesla MRI as compared to standard magnetic field strengths (1.5 and 3 Tesla) for functional MRI, arterial spin labeling measuring blood flow, T1- and T2*-anatomical contrasts. It will be shown that 7 Tesla MRI is a game changer for studying the human brain both in healthy subjects and patients. In addition, I will describe the enhanced technological challenges at 7 Tesla, mainly RF-transmit and -receive inhomogeneities, and how to homogenize image contrasts using parallel transmission techniques and RF pulse design.
