Dear all,

We will have our next Biomedical Engineering seminar today

Wednesday March 26th, at 1 pm

Location: Room 333 Lyman Duff Building (Biomedical Engineering Dpt, 3775
University Street).

Speaker: Sepide Movaghati, Master student under the supervision of Dr A.
Shmuel PhD, BME, McGill University

Since Sepide is a Master student registered to the course BMDE500 who is
giving this seminar as part of McGill conditions to obtain his M.Sc.,
special attendance from our department (staff and students) is really
expected, in order to give Sepide feedback on her research studies.

Title:
"Spectrotemporal analysis of the visual cortex response to natural images
and their phase-shuffled versions"

Abstract:
Studying the responses of the visual cortex to natural, predictable stimuli
and to non-predictable stimuli may shed light on how the visual cortex
analyzes visual information. The visual cortex comprises a cascade of areas
with bi-directional inter-areal connections. Recent studies in humans
suggested a top-down modulatory effect on the early stage of visual
processing and considered area V1 as an adaptive dynamic processor. To probe
the information flow in the visual cortex, I record MEG signals while
presenting natural images and their phase shuffled version. The local phase
information in an image is essential for perception, because important
visual features such as edges emerge at locations of maximal local phase
coherence. I perturb this informative feature of natural images by phase
scrambling and investigate the effect on the spectrotemporal behaviour of
the signals localized in different visual areas. The design and expected
results of my study will be discussed in the context of the framework of
predictive coding of sensory stimuli.
