Hello all,
The first CREATE-MIA Day of 2014 is happening this Friday, January 24. Two talks are scheduled. All are welcome.
10:30am - noon “Leveraging your Invention to Optimize Partnership Possibilities: A Win-Win Proposition”, Dr Mark Weber [McConnell Engineering MC103]: The commercialization of research outcomes is an important objective not just of researchers, but of most public and private funding programs as well. It can also be very rewarding, with potential impact on society, the economy, and the environment at large. Mark Weber of McGill’s Commercialization Office will review the format used by McGill for invention reporting and commercialization, and discuss strategies that allow researchers to work with industry and other partners to maximize the benefits to each.
2:30pm - 3:30pm “Ultrasound image analysis for applications in speech science”, Dr. Cathy Laporte, Department of Electrical Engineering, ÉTS [McConnell Engineering MC12]: (This talk is being presented as a colloquium in the SOCS Colloquium Series. An informal reception will follow): Ultrasound (US) imaging is an effective and non invasive way of observing the tongue motions involved in normal and pathological speech, and the results of US studies are of interest to the study of the mechanisms underlying speech as well as the development of new strategies in speech therapy. (Semi-)automatically segmenting the tongue contour as it evolves in ultrasound video sequences is an image analysis task of particular interest since it allows the systematic study of tongue shape and motion. Challenges include maintaining high quality tongue tracking over time, as well as monitoring segmentation quality and developing meaningful ways to characterize tongue shape and motion. Our preliminary results touch upon each of these challenges and show how new adaptations of techniques previously rooted in the computer vision literature can be combined to provide useful tools to the speech scientist.
