Dear all,

We will have a special Biomedical Engineering seminar this coming Monday at
4 pm

Monday November 25th, at 4 pm

Location: Room 333 Lyman Duff Building (Biomedical Engineering Dpt, 3775
University Street).

Speaker: Silvina Ferradal, PhD candidate under the supervision of Dr.
Culver, Washington University in St. Louis, USA.

Title:
Imaging the developing brain at the bedside with diffuse optical tomography

Abstract:
Adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes in preterm infants remain a clinical
concern. Resting-state functional connectivity MRI (fcMRI) provides a
mechanism to investigate functional deficits in the neonatal brain.
Longitudinal monitoring using MRI is often restricted and delayed in the
sickest infants due to logistical barriers related to challenges in
transportation to the MRI scanner. Alternatively, diffuse optical tomography
(DOT) is a portable imaging modality that has the ability to provide early
and continuous monitoring of brain function. Recent developments in
high-density diffuse optical tomography (HD-DOT) overcome previous
limitations of sparse DOT systems, providing improved image quality and
brain specificity. We recently developed functional connectivity DOT (fcDOT)
methods for bedside monitoring of neonates using HD-DOT systems. This talk
will present the techniques and demonstrate their successful application in
full-term and preterm infants neonates, including validations against the
gold standard of fcMRI.
