Subject: REMINDER: Jerzy Olszewski Lecture - TODAY

Jerzy Olszewski Lecture
TODAY at 4pm
Please note the lecture will be held in the Jeanne Timmins Amphitheatre

Dear Colleagues,
I am very pleased to welcome Ronald Davis from Scripps Research Institute Florida as the Jerzy Olszewski Lecturer of 2013.
His lecture is entitled  "Brain's Logic for Memory Formation and Forgetting".

Ronald Davis is known for his life's work on memory.  Through developing an exquisite model in Drosophila and focusing upon the olfactory system, he has revealed molecular, genetic, electrophysiological and systems changes that occur in the process of learning, memory and forgetting.  By use of the Drosophila, he has been able to apply in vivo imaging techniques for synaptic release and calcium influx to visualize memory traces within specific neurons and involving specific genes, signaling molecules or receptors. Accordingly, he has distinguished neuronal and molecular substrates for short, intermediate and long term memory traces, the latter dependent upon protein synthesis.  Most recently, he has begun to investigate the importance of certain genes in human disease by generating mouse knockouts that represent potential models for understanding memory deficits in diseases such as Alzheimer's.
Dr. Davis' research and laboratory can be viewed on his website:

I strongly encourage all to attend this honorary lecture which promises to be highly informative.
Barbara Jones
