Dear all,
Our next Biomedical Engineering Dpt seminar is this comin wednesday
Wednesday - March 27th, at 1 pm
Location: Room 333 Lyman Duff Building (Biomedical Engineering Dpt, 3775 University Street).
Speaker: Lara Kanbar, Master student under the supervision of Dr R. Kearney PhD, BME, McGill University
Since Lara is a Master student registered to the course BMDE500 who is giving this seminar as part of McGill conditions to obtain his M.Sc., special attendance from our department (staff and students) is really expected, in order to give Lara feedback on his research studies.
Title : Comparison of Cardiorespiratory Behavior in Premature Infants under Different Post-Extubation Ventilatory Support Modalities
Abstract:
Preterm Very Low Birthweight (VLBW) infants typically have respiratory problems and require mechanical ventilation during their first few days of life. Mechanical ventilation (ETT-MV) maintains a fixed respiratory rate by providing breaths through an endotracheal tube. Prolonged mechanical ventilation harms neonatal development, and may cause airway trauma, inflammation and fibrosis. Therefore, babies are typically weaned from ETT-MV as soon as physicians deem the baby prepared to switch to noninvasive ventilator support. Two popular post-extubation support modalities are Constant Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) and Nasal Intermittent Positive Pressure Ventilation (NIPPV). Currently, there is no quantitative basis by which one support modality is chosen over another. Thus, this research has compared the two modalities in terms of their frequency of onset of apnea, bradycardia, and other quantitative measures of cardiorespiratory behavior.
