Dear all,

Our next Biomedical Engineering Dpt seminar is this coming wednesday

Wednesday - February 13th, at 1 pm

Location: Room 333 Lyman Duff Building (Biomedical Engineering Dpt, 3775 University Street).

Speaker: Yaw Amoako-Tuffour, Master student under the supervision of Dr. Satya Prakash and Dr. Srikar Vengallatore, BME, McGill University

Since Yaw is a Master student who is giving this seminar as part of McGill conditions to obtain his M.Sc. , special attendance from our department (staff and students) is really expected, in order to give Yaw feedback on his research studies.

Title : Development of an Automated, Ingestible Gastrointestinal Sampling Device

Abstract:
An ingestible, electromechanical capsule was designed to collect physical samples from the lumen of the human gastrointestinal tract with the aims of being able to better localize the source of gastrointestinal ailments, explore the microbiome, and monitor metabolic processes. A complete prototype was developed encompassing hardware, custom electronics, firmware and a novel sampling mechanism leveraging the cylindrical shape of the device. The prototype was assessed for: its ability to collect samples and maintain their integrity, withstand the environmental conditions and forces associated with normal clinical use, and for its ability to transit safely through the GI tract. Cross contamination was capped at 7% over a 12 hour period at 37°C, the DNA recovery rate was 50% over 24 hours at 37 °C, and the device was capable of collecting heterogeneous samples. The device was demonstrated to be an effective and non-invasive means to study the physiology of the GI tract and serve as a platform for further development in personalized medicine, drug delivery and GI
