Our next Biomedical Engineering Dpt seminar  is this coming Wednesday

Location: Room  333 Lyman Duff Building (Biomedical Engineering Dpt, 3775  University Street).

Speaker: Richard Shapiro, Master student under the supervision of Dr R. Funnell PhD, BME, McGill University

Since Richard is a Master student registered to the course BMDE500 who is giving this seminar as part of McGill conditions to obtain his M.Sc., special attendance from our department (staff and students) is really expected, in order to give Richard feedback on his research studies.

Title : Middle-ear Mechanics: Experimental Studies of Eardrum Vibrations

Abstract:
Hearing loss is one of the most common birth defects. Early identification and diagnosis of hearing loss in infants is extremely important because even a mild uncorrected loss can negatively affect language and speech development, leading to subsequent educational and behavioural difficulties. However, the standard tools used for newborn hearing screening produce many false positives. This is primarily due to the presence of liquid in the middle ear, which is normal and transient. The overall goal of the research programme is to gain an improved understanding of tympanometry, a promising tool that relies on a combination of sounds and static pressurization to assess middle-ear function. In my master’s work, the gerbil eardrum is exposed in order to perform vibration measurements by means of laser Doppler vibrometry. I have developed a new acoustic coupler that reduces laser-beam reflections, provides a better view of the eardrum, and can be easily removed and replaced during experiments. The latter feature will allow for the investigation of the effects of the microbeads that are currently used as targets for the laser beam. In addition, I aim to explore the effectiveness of alternative reflective materials to replace the use of microbeads. I have also made a number of improvements to the mechanical and electrical components of an existing pressurization device. Enhancements to the coupler are currently being designed that will allow pressurized vibration measurements, comparable to tympanometry.
