Spectral Demons: Possible Links between Image Segmentation and Registration

Image segmentation and registration are building blocks for many computer vision and medical applications. However, challenges arise when objects, or organs, exhibit high shape variability (e.g., registration is often limited by the local scope of update forces derived from the image gradient). To this effect, a new algorithm, named the Spectral Demons, is proposed to capture large deformations between images. Interestingly, its strong links with spectral graph theory indicate that image segmentation and registration may be unified into a single formulation. This presentation aims at determining possible future work and potential collaborative research .

Hervé is finishing his PhD in collaboration with Polytechnique, Montreal; Siemens Corporate Research, Princeton, NJ (where he was also a former research associate under the supervision of Leo Grady and Chenyang Xu); and INRIA Sophia-Antipolis, France (under the supervision of Hervé Delingette and Nicholas Ayache). His current research is on modeling the cardiac fiber architecture from DT-MRI.
