Dear all,
Our next Biomedical Engineering Dpt seminar is this coming wednesday
Wednesday - March 28st, at 13h
Location: Room 333 Lyman Duff Building (Biomedical Engineering Dpt, 3775 University Street).
Speaker: Sujaya Neupane , Master student under the supervision of Dr. A. Shmuel
Since Sujaya is a Master student who is giving this seminar as part of the course BMDE500, special attendance from our department (staff and students) is really expected, in order to give Sujaya feedback on his research studies.
Title: Neural mechanisms of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation
Abstract:
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation method which is used in neuroscience research to infer information about processing in different areas of the brain. As of recently, it is also used to treat psychiatric and neurological diseases. However, the mechanisms underlying the effects of TMS at the cortical level are largely unknown. In my Master's project, I try to address these questions by using in-vivo electrophysiology recordings from an animal model while applying different repetitive TMS (rTMS) paradigms of varying intensities. Using 10x10 electrode arrays, recordings were pursued in cat visual area 18 in conjunction with visual stimuli. In the presentation, I will show findings about the effects of rTMS on evoked and spontaneous activity. Moreover, a mechanism of gain effect will be proposed to explain the relationship between pre-TMS activity and different epochs of post-TMS activity.
