Speaker: Imran Sulemankhil, Master student under the supervision of Dr. S. Prakash

Since Imran is a Master student who is giving this seminar as part of the course BMDE500, special attendance from our department (staff and students) is really expected, in order to give Imran  feedback on his research studies.

Title: Screening, Isolation, Optimization, and Safety Validation of a Nitrate-Reductase Active Bacteria

Abstract:
In the 1970s, research had indicated that the reduction of nitrate to nitrite could lead to gastric cancer and other ailment. However, recent studies indicate that the formation of nitrite and subsequent reduction into nitric oxide can elicit a variety of benefits. Here we report on a statistical approach for media optimization of an isolated nitrate reductase active bacteria.  By using the Plankett-Burman method and response-surface methodology, it was possible to optimize the nitrate reductase activity by 15-fold. Rather than the classical method that employs a one-at-a-time change of media components, this methods offer a more rapid, yet, statistically valid approach to media optimization. Furthermore, the strain safety validation was evaluated.
