Subject: Herbert Jasper Lecture - Tuesday, May 17, 2011

Dear Colleagues,
We are pleased to welcome Dr. Barry Connors as the Herbert Jasper Lecturer for 2011. Dr. Connors is the Chairman of the Department of Neuroscience at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. He is known for his work on electrical or gap junctions among interneurons in the cortex and reticularis neurons in the thalamus. He has shown that such electrical transmission together with fast chemical transmission among GABAergic neurons provides a means for synchronizing local cell groups that in turn shape rhythmic oscillations within thalamocortical systems. Such synchronization could underlie fast cortical rhythms such as gamma activity (30-60 Hz), associated with arousal and attention, and slower thalamocortical rhythms such as spindling (12-14 Hz), associated with sleep and loss of consciousness.

We look forward to an informative and stimulating lecture posing the question:
"What are electrical synapses doing in the mammalian forebrain?"
