Killam Lecture

Speaker:  Jerold Chun, PhD

Department of Pharmacology

Scripps Research Institute, University of California, San Diego

Title: Lysophospholipid Receptors: Roles in the CNS and Multiple Sclerosis

Date:  TODAY

Time:  4pm

Place:  de Grandpre Communications Centre

============================================

Jerold Chun is a professor in the Department of Molecular Biology at the Scripps Research Institute and adjunct professor at UCSD. His Killam presentation will focus on his leading edge studies of the receptor-mediated effects of naturally occurring lysophopholipids, namely lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) and sphingosine-1 phosphate (S1P). The S1P receptor agonist FTY720 has just been approved as a clinical therapy for relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis based on its observed immunologic actions. The drug readily accesses the CNS. His presentation will review the mechanisms of action of FTY on the immune systems and detail his recent studies that used genetic manipulation of S1P receptor on glial cells to show how modulating S1P receptor signaling can impact both on tissue injury and repair within the CNS.
