Killam Lecture

Speaker: Paul Matthews, PhD

Department of Clinical Neurosciences

Imperial College, London

Title: Brain Imaging for Understanding Molecular Bases of Human Variation

Date: Tuesday, October 19, 2010

Time: 4pm

Place: de Grandpre Communications Centre

On 19 October 2010, the Neuro's Killam Lecturer will be Dr. Paul M. Matthews, Professor of Clinical Neurosciences at Imperial College London. Prof. Matthews also holds the title of Vice President for Imaging and Head of the GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) Clinical Imaging Centre at Hammersmith Hospital, within the Drug Discovery Division of GSK. The Clinical Imaging Centre is a unique venture jointly undertaken by GSK, Imperial College London and the UK Medical Research Council. The Imaging Centre is one of the largest imaging centres in Europe dedicated to development and application of imaging techniques for clinical research.

As many of you know, Paul is an old friend of the Neuro's and he trained and worked here before moving to the UK. He has continued to maintain close ties with our Institute even after his departure and is an Adjunct Professor of Neurology and Neurosurgery at McGill. We are therefore extremely delighted to see Paul again here in Montreal. His visit also represents a further step toward cementing the ties between Imperial College London and the Neuro, who has been a major player in promoting the recent signing of a formal Neuroscience Partnership between McGill and Imperial College London.

Paul is an expert in using magnetic resonance imaging to understand the way the brain functions. He has published many seminal papers in leading scientific journals, has been author or contributor to more than 50 books, and was also the co author, with Jeffrey McQuain, of The Bard on the Brain: Understanding the Mind Through the Art of Shakespeare and the Science of Brain Imaging. The title of his seminar tomorrow at 4:00 pm in the de Grandpre Communications Centre will be "Brain imaging for understanding molecular bases of human variation". I am very much looking forward to Paul's talk and hope that many of you will be able to attend his presentation.
