Please join us at noon on October 13th as Jamila Andoh, (Ph.D) post-doctoral researcher in the Zlab at the Montreal Neurological Institute, McGill University, will talk on "Modulation of language processing using TMS and MR."
Abstract:
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) has become widely used to investigate cognitive functions, such as language. By interfering with neural excitability, TMS provides tools to trace the neural circuitry underlying human language processing. However, the neural mechanisms of TMS-induced effects are still unclear, and vary depending on stimulation parameters, areas stimulated, and experimental tasks used.
We will present some results of TMS-behaviorally induced changes in language-related areas as well as some evidence of TMS-induced changes in task-related fMRI response in areas connected with the stimulation site. These results support a model of cooperation between hemispheres and add to the literature on intra- or interhemispheric compensation after a TMS-induced interference. In addition, the underlying mechanisms mediating interhemispheric excitability changes have been shown to be frequency dependent; providing some answers to the variability of TMS-induced changes in language studies.
