Kari Stefansson is a neurologist/neuropathologist who is the founder of deCODE Genetics, a company that has been a global leader in the discovery of genes that underlie susceptibility to a wide range of human disorders, including those that are of specific interest to basic and clinical neuroscientists. Amongst these are cerebral vascular disease, migraine, and schizophrenia.  The scope and successes of his programme are reflected in the more that one dozen publications appearing in Nature/Nature Genetics in 2009.  His scientific approach applying molecular genetic analyses to a comprehensive population with well documented clinical information has received wide international attention.  As well, Kari Stefansson was named one of Time Magazines 100 in 2007.
