In this presentation, the broad vision of robotics will be first introduced, then, the principles and basis of several problems and example solutions in the development of autonomous robots will be given. Potential innovations that can be expected in the near future in this area will also be outlined. Several aspects of outstanding problems which make the development of truly autonomous robots challenging will be discussed, and key technologies that can have significant influence on the field of robotics will be highlighted. MCBRIDE IS A CANDIDATE FOR A FACULTY POSITION AT THE MNI** ========================================================= Dr. McBride obtained her undergraduate degree in the Department of Biochemistry at McGill University in Montreal in 1991. She remained here for her graduate studies with Dr. Gordon Shore and was awarded her PhD in 1996. During her PhD research, she uncovered novel principles in mitochondrial protein biogenesis, examining how mitochondrial proteins are correctly targeted for entry into the organelle. In 1996, she moved to the European Molecular Biology Laboratories in Heidelberg, Germany, to work with Dr. Marino Zerial studying the function of Rab GTPases and the molecular mechanisms that govern vesicular traffic within the early endosome. Dr. McBride joined the Lipoprotein and Atherosclerosis Group in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the Heart Institute in 2000. She merged her postdoctoral training in cell biology with her PhD work in mitochondrial biogenesis to investigate the function and regulation of mitochondrial dynamics in living cells. For this, she was awarded the Premier's Research Excellence Award in 2001, the Young Professor of the Year Award from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ottawa in 2004, and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2006. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Communications Centre (MNI), is Dr. Mark Frye from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute , Department of Integrative Biology and Physiology . The title of his talk is: Multisensory systems integration in Drosophila: behavioral algorithms and circuits . Mark's laboratory focuses on integration of biological and engineering techniques to investigate multi-sensory processing and sensory-motor integration at genetic, cellular, cell-system, and organ-system levels of organization. In particular he investigates the behavior of flies in "virtual reality" simulators during visual and olfactory stimulation. These behaviors can be manipulated with changes to the environment or genetic changes to the animals themselves. This is a unique and fascinating approach to understanding how information from multiple senses is processed, integrated, and transformed into the biomechanics of complex behavior. You may go to the following website for more information on the Frye lab: http://www.physci.ucla.edu/research/frye/ I am looking forward to seeing you all there. Christopher Pack, Ph.D. Naomi M. This week Prof. Oussama Khatib will give a lecture on Robots Among Humans. CIM 25^th Anniversary Seminars on Brain, Body & Machine Centre for Intelligent Machines McGill University ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Time: Friday, April 23, 2010, 18:00 - 19:00 Place: McDonald-Harrington Bldg., Room G-10 * * * Robots Among Humans * * * * Prof. Oussama Khatib* * * * Department of Computer Science* * Stanford University* * * Stanford, CA, USA * * Robotics is rapidly expanding into the human environment and vigorously engaged in its new emerging challenges. From a largely dominant industrial focus, robotics has undergone, by the turn of the new millennium, a major transformation in scope and dimensions. This expansion has been brought about by the maturity of the field and the advances in its related technologies to address the pressing needs for human-centered robotic applications. Interacting, exploring, and working with humans, the new generation of robots will increasingly touch people and their lives, in homes, workplaces, and communities, providing support in services, entertainment, education, health care, and assistance. The discussion focuses on new design concepts, novel sensing modalities, efficient planning and control strategies, modeling of human motion and skills, which are among the key requirements for safe, dependable, and competent robots. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please find the seminar poster at http://www.cim.mcgill.ca/cim25/SEMINAR-Oussama.pdf.
