>From Psychosis to Chronic Pain and Everything in Between:
Exploring the Curiously Broad Impact of Acceptance, Mindfulness, and
Values
Steven C. Hayes
University of Nevada
For many years, applied psychological scientists hoped that rapid
progress in clinical areas could be built on randomized controlled
trials of manuals linked to syndromes. After decades of effort some
progress has been made, but it has slowed. A more theoretically
sophisticated strategy seems to be needed to pick up the pace of
scientific and practical advances. In this talk I will explain how
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy came to be focused on acceptance,
mindfulness, and values as key transdiagnostic processes. I will review
the evidence suggesting that they provide the foundation for a unified
model of behavior change with a startlingly broad range of application
across a full range of clinical problems (mental health, substance
abuse, behavioral aspects of chronic disease) but continuing even into
such areas as stigma, prejudice, ability to learn, and performance.
