On Tuesday January 20 at 4pm, the Killam speaker will be Hal Blumenfeld,
MD, PhD, Associate Professor in the departments of Neurology,
Neurobiology and Neurosurgery at Yale University. The title of his talk
is "Epilepsy and consciousness: why are patients with absence epilepsy
absent?" Hal has been working with behavioral, electrophysiological and
metabolic measurements during seizures in humans and experimental
animals. He has been particularly interested in the effect that seizure
discharges have at a distance and how they can affect brain function,
particularly attempting to tease out the different components of what we
simplistically call a "generalized" seizure. He has made use of
sophisticated techniques including combining measurements of EEG, fMRI,
blood flow and oxygen consumption. A few of his publications are listed
