Subject: K.A.C. Elliott Lecture - TODAY

Dear Colleagues,

I am pleased to announce the KAC Elliott invited lecturer this year as Dr. Rémi Quirion who is a McGill University Full Professor and Scientific Director at the Douglas Hospital Research Centre (a McGill affiliated teaching hospital). Effective April 1, 2009 Dr. Quirion was also appointed Vice Dean - Sciences & Strategic Initiatives, Senior University Advisor on Health Sciences Research at McGill University's Faculty of Medicine.

Under Rémi Quirion's leadership, the Douglas Mental Health University Institute has become a premier research facility in Canada in the fields of neurosciences and mental health. Dr Quirion has promoted the development of clinical research in Neurology and Psychiatry as well as social and evaluation aspects of research in mental health and addiction. His research interests include: understanding the relationships between key phenotypes of the Alzheimer's brain, molecular and pharmacological features of neuropeptide receptors focusing on NPY and CGRP, and their role in memory, pain and drug dependence, and models of schizophrenia. One of his major interests lies in the teaching and training of the next generation of researchers. Throughout his extensive scientific career Dr. Quirion has been invited worldwide to numerous conferences and has received several awards and honors, including Fellow of Royal Society of Canada 2003, Prix Wilder-Penfield ( Prix du Quebec, highest Distinction in Biomedical Research in Quebec 2004), and Officer of Order of Canada in year 2007.
