Dear colleagues,
Dr. Kamil Uludag from the Max-Planck Institute in Tuebingen, Germany,
will
be visiting us April 30th - May 1st. He will give a talk on May 1st,
11:00 AM, at the
de Grandpre Communications Centre. His expertise is around the mechanism
and modeling
of fMRI signals, including BOLD and cerebral blood flow.
To arrange a meeting with him, please send an email to Ms. Toula
Papadopoulos,
toula.papadopoulos at mcgill.ca
Thank you,
Amir Shmuel.
Title: Exploring the limits of fMRI
Abstract: The BOLD signal is an indirect measure of neuronal activity.
Its physiological and physical basis is still poorly understood and
therefore interpretation of fMRI signals might be ambigious. In the
first part of my talk, I will discuss current limits and models of fMRI.
In particular, the newly developed extended ballon model -- linking
vascular physiology and physics of imaging - and general BOLD model up
to 16.4T field strength for both GRE & SE will be presented. In the
second part, I will show how, nonetheless, fMRI can be used to infer
direct conclusion about neuronal activity. Recent results obtained at
the MPI for biological Cybernetics using millisecond visual stimulation,
EEG-fMRI combination and adaptation fMRI design will be discussed.
