At McGill University, Environmental Health & Safety and Student Health Services are taking measures to promote effective handwashing in order to reduce disease transmission. Handwashing, when done correctly, is the most effective way to prevent the spread of infections such as the flu, cold or gastroenteritis.

When should you wash your hands?

- Before and after any contact with the public

- After any accidental contamination or when your hands are soiled

- After going to the bathroom

- After handing garbage

- After blowing your nose or sneezing into your hands

- Before preparing, handling, serving or eating food

- At the end of your workday

What is good hand washing technique?

There is more to hand washing than you think!

- Moisten hands and wrists

- Apply a generous portion of soap

- Rub your hands together, making a soapy lather for at least 15 seconds. Do this away from the running water and be careful not to wash the lather away. Wash between your fingers, under your nails and wash both front and back of your hands

- Rinse well under warm running water

- Wipe and dry hands well with paper towel

- Turn off water using paper towel
