Today's Killam speaker is Dennis Winge, a professor in Medicine and
Biochemistry at the University of Utah. His lab studies how metal ions
(copper, zinc, iron) are distributed in cells to sites of utilization,
and the mechanisms by which cells sense the intracellular concentration
of these ions and transduce these signals into regulation of gene
expression. One major focus of his lab concerns mechanisms by which
cells provide copper ions within the mitochondrion for assembly of
metalloproteins, which is the topic of his lecture today. Dysregulation
of cellular copper metabolism underlies several neurodegenerative
diseases. Dennis is an excellent biochemist/molecular biologist and a
great speaker. He is organizing the first Gordon conference on Metals in
Cell Biology this summer.
