From madeleine.sharp at mcgill.ca Wed Apr 3 16:01:26 2024 From: madeleine.sharp at mcgill.ca (Madeleine Sharp) Date: Wed, 3 Apr 2024 20:01:26 +0000 Subject: [BIC-announce] Open post-doc position Message-ID: Can you disseminate this ad for an open post-doc position: Hi BIC, Yashar Zeighami (Douglas Research Centre) and I are looking for a post-doc to work on a new project that will leverage existing multi-modal datasets to investigate the different sources of heterogeneity in Parkinson?s disease. The goal of the project is to understand and to quantify to what degree this heterogeneity stems from differences in the underlying neurobiology of PD versus differences in ?host? factors (e.g., co-morbid neuropathologies, health risk factors, social determinants of health, etc.). Full job description below. Interested applicants should their CV to Yashar.zeighami at mcgill.ca & madeleine.sharp at mcgill.ca Thanks! Madeleine We are looking for a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to join the laboratories of Madeleine Sharp MD, Assistant Professor of Neurology and Neurosurgery, Montreal Neurological Institute at McGill University and Yashar Zeighami PhD, Assistant Professor pf Psychiatry, Douglas Research Centre at McGill University to study the phenotypic variability of Parkinson?s disease using multi-modal datasets. Parkinson?s disease is characterized by marked heterogeneity in both the clinical manifestations of the disease and the progression of disease. The goal of the present research project is to understand to what degree this heterogeneity stems from differences in the underlying neurobiology of PD (e.g., different disease ?biotypes?) versus differences in ?host? factors (e.g., age, sex, social determinants of health, cardiovascular disease, co-morbid neuropathologies). The project will leverage existing large open or local datasets (UKBB, PPMI, FoxInsight, QPN) and apply a disease modelling approach to examine the effect of host factors on PD clinical outcomes, the differential heterogeneity of key clinical outcomes such as mood and cognitive symptoms in PD versus control populations, and the differential progression over time and with age of these outcomes. Neuroimaging, clinical, self-report and behavioural data will primarily be used. Candidates with a strong computational background are encouraged to apply. Competitive candidates should have a strong background in data analysis, neuroimaging (including structural and functional MRI) and application of these skills to clinical questions. They should be comfortable with manuscript preparation and supervision of graduate students and research assistants. The applicant will split their time between the Montreal Neurological Institute and the Douglas Research Institute. Both institutes are affiliated with McGill University and home to vibrant neuroscience research communities spanning the rage of basic to clinical research with an emphasis on translational research. The successful applicant will have access to a wide range of weekly seminars as well as professional development opportunities through McGill University. Required qualifications: * PhD in Neuroscience, Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering, or related field * Track record of first author publications and excellent writing skills * Experience with data analysis and proficiency with at least one of R, MATLAB, and Python programming, as well as experience with bash and working with computing clusters. * Experience with neuroimaging analysis packages (e.g. FreeSurfer, MINCToolKits, SPM, FSL) This is a 1- to 2-year position with possibility for extension based on obtention of competitive post-doctoral funding. Salary will be commensurate with experience. Interested applicants should send their statement of interest and their CV to Madeleine Sharp at madeleine.sharp at mcgill.ca and Yashar Zeighami at yashar.zeighami at mcgill.ca AND apply here: https://mcgill.wd3.myworkdayjobs.com/McGill_Careers/job/Montreal-Neuro/Postdoctoral-Researcher_JR0000052302-1 McGill University is committed to equity in employment and diversity. The Digital Research Alliance of Canada?s Data Management Planning Expert Group (DMPEG) has developed this template over the course of the past several months. This template is simplified to recognize that at the pre-funding stage, a DMP may not necessarily require the same level of detail as one that is developed for supporting active projects. This template offers another opportunity for researchers and institutions to provide support for data management planning as we approach changes in the way data are seen, managed, and engaged with in the context of Canadian research. The finalized version of this template was developed following significant structured review and user testing conducted across a range of key stakeholder groups including researchers, DMP Assistant Administrators, the Digital Research Alliance of Canada?s RDM Network of Experts, and the Tri-Agency. The valuable feedback garnered from these activities resulted in revisions being made to this template to ensure it meets the needs of itscore user groups. There are additionally plans to conduct post-release review, user testing, and feedback activities, with these occurring within 12 months of its release., In advance of its launch and release within the Alliance?s DMP Assistant platform hosted at the University of Alberta Library, the finalized version of this template is today being made available to DMP Assistant Administrators situated at institutions and organizations across Canada, and members of the Alliance?s RDM Network of Experts. This marks a period of approximately 6 weeks where stakeholders and institutions can prepare for the template?s release, including awareness and outreach activities, communications, and drafting of customizations that they may wish to make to the template?s questions and/or guidance to support local needs. We ask that while you have this time to prepare, that you do not begin the process of implementing it in DMP Assistant as this can be done after the template is officially launched this Spring. The Alliance and DMPEG are additionally planning to deliver webinars in support of the release of this template and to officially mark its availability to stakeholders and the Canadian researcher community. We anticipate these sessions will be scheduled in later May. Should you have any questions regarding the new DMP template and its release please direct them to dmp-assistant at support.alliancecan.ca. To unsubscribe from the MEMBERS-PORTAGE list, please click here. Our intuition points to slowly changing factors, like having a good night?s sleep or a cup of coffee. Remarkably, an influential factor may operate so quickly that it eludes our conscious reflections and psychological investigation?the hippocampal theta rhythm. We know that this rhythm matters for the brain; at different phases of theta, rodent hippocampal neurons receive input from different sources and tend to strengthen vs. weaken their connections. But, do people's memory abilities also depend on the phase of these rhythms? I will present my lab's first attempts to answer this question. First, doubling down on behavior, I'll present our adaptation of the behavioral oscillation paradigm popularly used to study the rhythms of attention. With it, we can reconstruct the time course of how equipped people are to form memories. We do this with millisecond precision following an oscillatory resetting stimulus (attention-grabbing cue). Second, I will present our approach to targeting specific hippocampal theta phases with deep-brain stimulation to assess their causal involvement in memory formation. Together, this work shows that memory processes aren't always on, ready to capture or relive experiences. Instead, they paint memory as a rhythmic process with its outcomes at the whim of its beat. > > The Feindel Seminar Series at The Neuro > Advances the vision of Dr. William Feindel (1918?2014), Former Director of the Neuro (1972?1984), to constantly bridge the clinical and research realms.
