Christine Tardif and David Rudko as new BIC core Faculty members, effective May 01, 2017. We?re truly fortunate to see them join the BIC team and platform as MR specialists, in particular at ultra-high fields for small-animal and human imaging. [cid:0759ED99-86A8-4591-B4D8-EB4E78BE7386 at campus.MCGILL.CA] Prof David Rudko Assistant Professor Dr. David Rudko joins the BIC core Faculty as Assistant Professor in the Departments of Neurology and Neurosurgery and Biomedical Engineering. He completed his PhD in Physics with a specialization in ultra-high field MRI under the supervision of Dr. Ravi Menon at the University of Western Ontario. The overall focus of his lab is the application of novel high field MRI methodology in conjunction with biophysical modeling to augment the current understanding of brain anatomy and physiology. One of his specific goals is to extend magnetic susceptibility and relaxometry-based MRI models of brain tissue microstructure to develop atlases applicable to neurological disease. David has applied MRI physics techniques to research in animal models and human neurological diseases at field strengths of 3 T, 7 T and 9.4 T. His recent work has centred on quantification of cortical demyelination in MS patients using surface-based 3 T magnetization transfer imaging combined with ultra-high resolution 7 T structural imaging. [cid:F8A5C88E-11E2-48B2-A210-71531918F09B at campus.MCGILL.CA] Prof Christine Tardif Assistant Professor Very glad to see Dr. Christine Tardif joining the BIC core Faculty as Assistant Professor, starting May 1, 2017. Christine obtained her PhD in Biomedical Engineering at the McGill in 2011. She performed postdoctoral studies at the Max-Planck Institute for Cognitive and Brain Sciences (Leipzig, Germany), and at the Douglas Mental Health University Institute?s Cerebral Imaging Centre. Her research has focused on the development of MRI acquisition and analysis techniques to study intracortical myelin. At the BIC , Christine?s lab will further develop quantitative MRI techniques to study brain tissue microstructure, in particular myelin plasticity, in health and disease. The regular schedule for the Prisma will resume tomorrow (Wednesday, May 10). Note that this announcement applies to the 3T - the 1.5T will unfortunately not be returning to service (info to follow in separate email). I would like to thank the MR Unit staff and all MRI users for their collaboration and patience during this year's facility upgrades. As the cost of recovering from such an event greatly exceeds the value of the scanner and any foreseeable revenues, we must unfortunately announce the end of 1.5T MRI services at the BIC. I realize that this will be inconvenient for some users, but 1.5T usage has gradually dwindled to very low levels and we have offered the service for as long as was reasonably possible. We are evaluating the possibility of re-deploying the system as a mock MRI scanner in the short term, pending longer-term discussion and planning of future use of the 1.5T scanner bay. I want to reassure users that the 3T magnet is covered by a service contract that would include repairs in a similar event. The service contract on the 1.5T has been scaled down in recent years and was eventually terminated given low usage of the system and its age (>20 years). We knew that a prohibitively expensive repair would come one day, and the system decided to go out on a very definitive note. If you are impacted by the termination of 1.5T services and need help adapting, please contact me so we can discuss. Also, it will be helpful to gauge the level of interest in a mock MRI scanner for training participants in behavioural protocols, so please email Mike Ferreira with me in cc if you expect to use such a resource. I would like to thank all past users of the 1.5T scanner for their support of the BIC MRI program, Rick --- Rick Hoge, Ph.D. Program Director for MRI McConnell Brain Imaging Centre, Montreal Neurological Institute Associate Professor, Dept. of Neurology & Neurosurgery Associate Member, Dept. of Biomedical Engineering McGill University rick.hoge at mcgill.ca 514-398-1929 From zografos.caramanos at mcgill.ca Wed May 10 01:17:15 2017 From: zografos.caramanos at mcgill.ca (Zografos Caramanos, Mr) Date: Wed, 10 May 2017 05:17:15 +0000 Subject: [BIC-announce] =?iso-8859-1?q?=5BTODAY=5D_-_Neuro_Film_Series_-_?= =?iso-8859-1?q?=22When_I_Walk=22_-_May_10=2C_2017_at_6=3A30_pm=3B_de_Gran?= =?iso-8859-1?q?dpr=E9_Communications_Centre?= Message-ID: The 2017 Neuro Film Series continues on May 10 at 6:30 p.m. in the de Grandpr? Communications Centre with the screening of the MS-themed "When I Walk". About the film, When I Walk In 2006, 25-year-old Jason DaSilva was on vacation at the beach with family when, suddenly, he fell down. He couldn't get back up. His legs had stopped working; his disease could no longer be ignored. Just a few months earlier doctors had told him that he had multiple sclerosis, which could lead to loss of vision and muscle control, as well as a myriad of other complications. Jason tried exercise to help cope, but the problem only worsened. After his dispiriting fall on the beach, he turned to his Mom, who reminded him that, despite his disease, he was still a fortunate kid who had the opportunity to pursue the things he loved most: art and filmmaking. Jason picked up the camera, turned it on his declining body, and set out on a worldwide journey in search of healing, self-discovery, and love. About the hosts: Zografos Caramanos, Hana Salaheddine, and Patricia Rizan Neuro host, Zografos 'Aki' Caramanos is a Research Assistant and Lab Coordinator in Dr. Douglas Arnold's Magnetic Resonance Studies Lab, a brain imaging lab at The Neuro, where he makes use of magnetic resonance imaging data in order to better understand the relationship between neuropathology and disability in people living with multiple sclerosis. Hana Salaheddine, who is living with multiple sclerosis, will answer questions about her experiences following the film. In addition, Aki will offer comments and invite discussion about the film. Patricia Rizan of the Quebec MS Society (Soci?t? canadienne de la scl?rose en plaques) will be present and will speak briefly about the organization and what they offer to the MS community. Both the movie and popcorn are FREE! Everyone is most welcome! Films take place at The Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital (3801 University Street), in the de Grandpr? This is a terrific opportunity for students and colleagues alike? Best, Kaleem --------------------------------------------------- Friday May 19th, McConnell Engineering 437, 11:00 am to 12:30 (2 back to back talks for 45 minutes) each. Olga Veksler, Western University Title: Adaptive and Move Making Auxiliary Cuts for Binary Pairwise Energies Abstract: Many computer vision problems require optimization of binary non-submodular energies. In this context, local iterative submodularization techniques based on trust region (LSA-TR) and auxiliary functions (LSA-AUX) have been recently proposed. They achieve state-of-the-art-results on a number of computer vision applications. We extend the LSA-AUX framework in two directions. First, unlike LSA-AUX, which selects auxiliary functions based solely on the current solution, we propose to incorporate several additional criteria. This results in tighter bounds for configurations that are more likely or closer to the current solution. Second, we propose move-making extensions of LSA-AUX which achieve tighter bounds by restricting the search space. Finally, we evaluate our methods on several applications. We show that for each application at least one of our extensions significantly outperforms the original LSA-AUX. Moreover, the best extension of LSA-AUX is comparable to or better than LSA-TR on four out of six applications. ?????????? Yuri Boykov, Western University Title: Kernel Clustering meets Markov Random Fields Abstract: The talk starts with an overview of standard kernel clustering techniques and their limitations. I particular we prove "Breiman's bias" under certain conditions and discuss its solutions. The talk also presents a new segmentation model combining common regularization energies, e.g. Markov Random Field (MRF) potentials, with standard pairwise clustering criteria like Normalized Cut (NC), average association (AA), etc. These clustering and regularization models are widely used in machine learning and computer vision, but they were not combined before due to significant differences in the corresponding optimization, e.g. spectral relaxation and combinatorial max-flow techniques. On the one hand, we show that common applications using MRF segmentation energies can benefit from a high-order NC term, e.g. enforcing balanced clustering of arbitrary high-dimensional image features combining color, texture, location, depth, motion, etc. On the other hand, standard clustering applications can benefit from an inclusion of common pairwise or higher-order MRF constraints, e.g. edge alignment, bin-consistency, label cost, etc. To address joint energies like NC+MRF, we propose efficient Kernel Cut algorithms based on bound optimization. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Lecture: De Grandpr? Communications Centre, MNI : 10h00 - 11h00 ? Reception : Helen Penfield Atrium : 11h00 - 11h30 Brain development is an important aspect in the study of the brain's vulnerability to damage and repair. She will illustrate this based on her studies of mouse models of cerebellar hypoplasia, cerebral palsy and radiation induced brain injury. She will also discuss new evidence showing that some of the acquired brain injury can be ameliorated by pharmacological (metformin) and lifestyle interventions (physical exercise). The lecture is the collaborative effort of The Neuro, the CFREF-funded Healthy Brains for Healthy Lives (HBHL) initiative and the Ludmer Centre.
