Communications Centre, Montreal Neurological Institute [Photo of?Nikola ?Stikov] Nikola Stikov Assistant Professor, Department of Electrical Engineering, ?cole Polytechnique Co-director, Neuroimaging Research Laboratory (NeuroPoly) Researcher at Montreal Heart Institute Abstract: Science communication is undergoing a revolution thanks to blogs and social media. However, the bulk of science journalism is still on the shoulders of professional writers, with only a small number of practicing scientists contributing to outreach efforts. Recently, the imaging community has recognized the need for a more coordinated effort to communicate its science to a broader audience. As a result, the blogs of the journal Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (www.ismrm.org/mrm) and the Organization for Human Brain Mapping (www.humanbrainmapping.org/blog) have been featured in the Huffington Post, cited in the New York Times, and published by Wiley as a periodical magazine. As the founder of the above blogs, I will discuss their grassroots approach to communicating science, and highlight their potential for recruiting and promoting the next generation of leaders in the field of magnetic resonance imaging. ________________________________ Feindel Brain Imaging Lecture Series: Winter-2017 Unless specified otherwise, lectures are held on Mondays at 1:00 pm in the de Grandpr? The work in question is an upgrade to the exterior quench pipes that vent into the Molson Stadium area. These pipes are based on an old design that no longer meets current safety standards, and I was advised by Siemens in November that the factory will no longer permit re-activation of a magnet that does not have an updated quench system. Because the work to update the quench pipes is exterior to the building, and impacts another McGill facility (the stadium), the process for planning and execution is much more involved than for work taking place entirely within the Neuro. It has thus not been possible to guarantee the work will be completed according to the original schedule, and I am reluctant to deactivate the magnet given this uncertainty. We are thus delaying ramp-down of the Trio until Friday February 24, so that the upgrade can commence on Monday February 27. Allocating six weeks for upgrade and commissioning, the new projected in-service date becomes April 6, 2017 (one month late). McGill Facilities has assured me that the quench pipe updates can be completed within this revised timeline. Siemens has also acknowledged that the importance of this should have been flagged earlier, and has made numerous concessions to help minimize further cost and delay. I know how disruptive this is for many of you, and can appreciate the frustration both for those who worked overtime to complete scans prior to the scheduled ramp-down, and for those who are on hold to start new studies after completion of the upgrade. We will re-open an updated booking schedule by the end of this week, for those who can still benefit from the extended availability of the Trio. Those of you who have scheduled scan slots in March will unfortunately have to reschedule these. I am truly sorry for the inconvenience - we have had to address a number of unexpected functional and safety issues in this project. Upon completion, the 3T suite will benefit from numerous upgrades in addition to the scanner. This is part of a Wellcome-funded programme, in collaboration with the University of Nottingham, to develop a new generation of MEG system based on a optically pumped magnetometers (OPMs). Optically pumped magnetometers are ultra-sensitive magnetic field detectors which can operate at room temperature, and so can be brought closer to the head than the cryogenically-cooled field detectors that are currently used in MEG imaging. The aim is to build a multi-channel OPM MEG device which can be worn on the head allowing the subject to move freely in an open and natural environment. The prospect of an affordable and wearable system has a number of exciting applications including novel paediatric and clinical imaging systems. The post is available from 1st April 2017 and is funded by a grant from the Wellcome Trust for three years in the first instance. Key Requirements Applicants should have a PhD in Neuroscience or related area and strong proven expertise in physics / engineering or related discipline. Strong expertise in programming, ideally Matlab, is essential, as is an excellent academic record with evidence of independent, creative work, a strong mathematical background, expertise in modelling / simulation and experience in M/EEG. It would also be desirable to have experience with one or more M/EEG software packages and the use of different volume conductor models. He is a consultant in MRI data analysis at the CRBLM with 5 years of experience in FSL, Matlab and (to a smaller extent) Freesurfer and SPM. On Tuesday 7 February he will be available from 10:00am to 12:00pm for Brain Imaging Open Support at the Rabinovitch House (3640 de la Montagne) where he will answer any questions and inquiries on the above topics (see event image). This event is open to any CRBLM faculty members and their postdocs, staff, graduate and undergraduate students. If you are interested to come, just email Thomas at thomas.at.crblm at gmail.com at least 24 hours in advance to make sure the session is not already fully booked, and include the general questions you need answers to. See you there! The CRBLM. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... URL:
