Nature. 2016 Aug 11;536(7615):171-8. Glasser MF, Coalson TS, Robinson EC, Hacker CD, Harwell J, Yacoub E, Ugurbil K, Andersson J, Beckmann CF, Jenkinson M, Smith SM, Van Essen DC. Abstract Understanding the amazingly complex human cerebral cortex requires a map (or parcellation) of its major subdivisions, known as cortical areas. Making an accurate areal map has been a century-old objective in neuroscience. Using multi-modal magnetic resonance images from the Human Connectome Project (HCP) and an objective semi-automated neuroanatomical approach, we delineated 180 areas per hemisphere bounded by sharp changes in cortical architecture, function, connectivity, and/or topography in a precisely aligned group average of 210 healthy young adults. We characterized 97 new areas and 83 areas previously reported using post-mortem microscopy or other specialized study-specific approaches. To enable automated delineation and identification of these areas in new HCP subjects and in future studies, we trained a machine-learning classifier to recognize the multi-modal 'fingerprint' of each cortical area. This classifier detected the presence of 96.6% of the cortical areas in new subjects, replicated the group parcellation, and could correctly locate areas in individuals with atypical parcellations. The freely available parcellation and classifier will enable substantially improved neuroanatomical precision for studies of the structural and functional organization of human cerebral cortex and its variation across individuals and in development, aging, and disease. ________________________________ Feindel Brain Imaging Lecture Series: Fall-2016 Unless specified otherwise, lectures are held on Mondays at 1:00 pm in the de Grandpr? Although we requested a date in December, it seems that the earliest we can have the installation is now the second week in January. The 3T MRI will thus be available as usual up until the normal McGill holiday begins (last day of normal operations is Tuesday, Dec. 20). Note that there are also no plans to shut down the 1.5T MRI prior to the holiday period, although it is now off service contract and is starting to show its age. I am still waiting for confirmation on whether a January upgrade will be possible, but expect the current information will be useful to those of you who are trying to finish studies on the Trio (i.e. before the upgrade). I also hope that the extended availability of the Trio will help offset this week's closure of the MRI unit for work on the sprinkler systems. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me, Mike, or Ilana. Rick --- Imaging the link between cardiorespiratory fitness, oxidative stress and cerebral health in cardiovascular disease Supervisor Claudine Gauthier Program description Chronic cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are associated with cerebrovascular damage and cognitive decline. Finding clinical strategies to improve cerebral health depends on our ability to measure the impact of CVD on the brain and the changes that follow interventions. We currently lack crucial information about the intermediate steps of the disease process, where prevention interventions can be effective. This project will use recent developments in quantitative Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) to measure vascular, metabolic and microstructural brain health, to understand how brain health is affected by CVD at this intermediate stage of the disease process. Three groups of older adults will be studied: a CVD group, a high-risk (HR) group and a healthy control (HC) group. Participants will undergo a cardiorespiratory fitness test, a neuropsychological battery and analysis of plasma markers of oxidative stress and inflammation. A quantitative 3T MRI exam will be used to measure cerebral blood flow (CBF) and cerebrovascular reactivity (CVR), oxygen extraction fraction (OEF), and white matter integrity via the g-ratio - an index of myelinated thickness. By using physiologically-relevant imaging protocols for measurement of cerebral health, this research will give us a key tool and essential information for understanding and leveraging cerebral plasticity. Academic qualifications required PhD in Neurosciences, Biomedical Engineering, Medical Physics or related fields, with experience in quantitative MRI. This has led to multiple requests for the same time slot that have not been addressed. We expect the situation to be resolved Monday, and apologize for the inconvenience. If you are uncertain whether you have a time slot between now and Monday, the best we can offer is that you phone the MRI techs at 514-398-6844 and ask for an update (keeping in mind that the techs also now have incomplete scheduling info). Gervais, vice-principale adjointe (ressources humaines) To all staff/students / ?: Tous les employ?s et ?tudiants La version fran?aise suit. AMUSE/Casuals plan to strike Saturday McGill has received an official notice from the Association of McGill University Support Employees (AMUSE/Casuals)/Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) indicating that the union has called a five-day strike effective Saturday, Oct. 29, at 7 a.m. until Wednesday, Nov. 2, at 11:59 p.m. AMUSE/PSAC (Casuals) represents some 1,000 casual employees, a vast majority of them students who work in support roles across the University, in areas such as Athletics and Recreation, Libraries, animal care and the bookstores. AMUSE/PSAC (Casuals) also represents many of our Work Study students. The University has been developing contingency plans in recent days and will be deploying them in order to limit as much as possible the impact of the strike on our operations and the activities planned for the next few days. The University and the union agreed at a meeting held this evening on the essential services to be provided over the weekend. The presence of picket lines should not impede your access to campus buildings or activities. If you are prevented from gaining access to a building or an event, please notify Security Services at 514-398-3000 (downtown campus) or 514 398-7777 (Macdonald Campus). We will keep you apprised of further developments as they unfold.
