Message-ID: <0F884DD8-B1BE-497F-BB58-EA1A7E61560B@mcgill.ca> Dear Members of the BIC Community: I want to address some rumours concerning a suspected contamination incident reported in our Cyclotron facility a few weeks ago, which disrupted radiotracer production and PET scanning temporarily. An incident did take place in the Unit in mid-January. A personal radioactive monitoring device displayed abnormal levels of exposure to radiation. In coordination with the MNI Radiation Safety Officer (RSO), the Cyclotron team immediately engaged procedures to gather all the facts and ensure the continued safety of our employees, PET users and research subjects. The investigation, furthered by the Commission de la Sant? et de la S?curit? du Travail and the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC), concluded that no one had been exposed to abnormal levels of radiations. Rather, it was determined that the personal radiation-monitoring device had been voluntarily manipulated to simulate possible contamination. CNSC regulations required temporary closure of the facility for two days. Within 24 hours all necessary measures were elaborated by our team and proposed to CNSC. In the 24 hours that followed, the proposed measures were approved by CNSC, the closure order was lifted, and we were authorized to resume production. In line with our untarnished record of safety at the McConnell Brain Imaging Centre, I am pleased to report that the CNSC confirmed that the health and safety of our staff and collaborators, including research participants, had never been put at risk. I am taking this opportunity to acknowledge the passion, professionalism and dedication of our PET and Cyclotron Unit team, which makes nuclear-imaging research an ongoing reality at the Neuro. Kudos also to Dr. Christian Janicki, our Radiation Safety Officer, and to the MNI executive team, Mr. Zahoor Chughtai in particular. Should you have any further questions concerning this event, please contact me directly. With my very best wishes, Sylvain. Boston University Center for Computational Neuroscience and Neural Technology (CompNet) and Boston University Biomedical Engineering Department Problems communicating in everyday settings: cortical control to hidden hearing loss Date: Friday, 20 March 2015 Time: 1:30 p.m. Location: Room 501, Goodman Cancer Research Centre, 1120 avenue des Pins Ouest ________________________________________________________________________ Abstract: In a crowded setting, selective auditory attention is what allows you to tune out boring, unimportant sounds and focus on what interests you. This focus of selective auditory attention enhances the neural representation of the attended source and suppresses the representation of competing sources. While many listeners can direct selective auditory attention effortlessly, listeners with hearing impairment often have difficulty. This makes sense, given that directing selective attention depends on being able to perceptually separate the acoustic scene into constituent sources; this, in turn, depends on the use of fine spectro-temporal sound features (e.g., harmonicity, interaural differences, common modulation, etc.) that may not be well represented in the impaired system. Recent studies in my lab and others show that even individuals with normal hearing thresholds can differ enormously in their ability to focus selective attention. We believe that some of these individual differences reflect differences in the fidelity with which supra-threshold sound is represented in the brainstem, even though detection thresholds are normal. Here, I will present data exploring the relationship between how well listeners can communicate in everyday settings and how well supra-threshold sound is encoded, measured both psychophysically and physiologically. Bio: Barbara Shinn-Cunningham is a Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Boston University. She graduated from Brown University in 1986 and earned her Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1995. She joined the faculty of Boston University in 1997, initially as a member of the now-defunct Department of Cognitive and Neural Systems. She is a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America, a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineers, and a lifetime National Associate of the National Research Council. She is currently Director of the Center for Computational Neuroscience and Neural Technology, which promotes interdisciplinary research at Boston University. Her research uses behavioural, neuroimaging and computational methods to study auditory attention, individual differences in hearing ability, crossmodal interactions, and spatial hearing, both in healthy adult populations and in individuals facing various challenges, including hearing loss, autism and blast injury. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Brainstorm is a free, open-source, multimodal data analysis and management software for electrophysiology, EEG and MEG, with integration of anatomical MRI. It is developed at the McConnell Brain Imaging Centre, with collaborators at USC, the Cleveland Clinic, MIT and Harvard Medical School. Brainstorm has a strong user base approaching 10,500 registrations. A Matlab license is not mandatory for using the compiled version. Free registration for the webinar: https://go2.mathworks.com/brainstorm-imaging-neural-activity-at-the-speed-of-brain-with-matlab-lwb-na-64941-B Please join us in reviewing the main features of Brainstorm, and provide feedback at brainstorm at sipi.usc.edu.
