Dear All:

Wishing everyone a healthy, safe and productive New Year, with a special thought for the sad events that took place in Paris today.

I would like to advertise the Special Lecture of Prof. Stanislas Dehaene (College de France), Thurs Feb 19 @ 11am at the MNI (Jeanne-Timmins Auditorium): "The multiple effects of literacy on the brain". Prof. Dehaene will be a host of the McConnell Brain Imaging Centre at the MNI/McGill.

Prof. Dehaene is truly an international figure in cognitive neuroscience, with an emphasis on the neural representations of literacy (e.g., reading), numeracy (numbers and quantities) and the theory of consciousness. Stan has also strong interest in how cognitive sciences can contribute to ameliorate learning techniques and academic education. He has published countless papers, quite a few in Nature and Science; most often using a variety of imaging techniques and beautiful experimental designs. Stan is also the successful author of several eloquent books (http://www.amazon.com/Stanislas-Dehaene/e/B000APVWYI)

Dear colleagues,

Some of you may remember my former PhD student, Jean Mary Zarate. She is now working as Cognitive Neuroscience editor at Nature Neuroscience, in New York, and will be visiting the Neuro in her official capacity on February 10. Jean expressed an interest in meeting with people working in cognition, systems, and neuroimaging during her visit, in order to see what new research areas people are working on and get ideas about the topics that the journal may want to cover. She would also be happy to answer question about the priorities and review process at NN. She will be here all day, so I would like to arrange meetings with as many faculty (perhaps together with senior trainees) as possible. If there are many people who want to speak to her on Feb. 10th we may need to combine a few meetings. Would you be so kind as to let us know if you are interested in meeting her, and if so when you are available on that day?

Dear All:

It is my great pleasure to announce the recruitment of  Dr. Paul Gravel as Research Assistant at the BIC's PET core unit.

Paul obtained his Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering at McGill University in 2015 (A. Reader's lab). He also received an M.Sc. in Neurological Sciences from McGill in 2008, and holds a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering with Computer Engineering major from the University of New-Brunswick.

Paul?s interests and expertise are in PET image acquisition and reconstruction, with an emphasis on radiotracer kinetic modeling and statistical parametric mapping (SPM).

At the BIC, Paul will contribute developments in PET image quantification using direct 4D PET reconstruction techniques. Very importantly, his primary mission is to provide training, assistance and expertise to all users of BIC's high-resolution, conventional and micro-PET scanners. Investigators and trainees seeking expert advice on PET image analysis shall contact Paul directly <paul.gravel2 at mail.mcgill.ca<mailto:paul.gravel2 at mail.mcgill.ca>> and CC Andrew Reader <andrew.reader at mcgill.ca<mailto:andrew.reader at mcgill.ca>>.
