The competition will occur during the regular Feindel Brain Imaging Lecture slot on May 25th, starting at 1:00 pm in the Grandpr? Communications Centre. The two top-voted presenters of the day will each receive a $500 BIC Travel Award thanks to proceeds from everyone at the MNI who has availed themselves of the coffee machine this year. Importantly, even if you aren't presenting, you'll still have a part to play as the winners will be determined by vote of the audience; so mark your calendars! If you are interested in presenting, please contact anastasia.sares at mail.mcgill.ca or benjamin.gold at mail.mcgill.ca with your title no later than May 13th before the competition date. In-progress and preliminary research is welcome. Please ask us if you are in doubt about your eligibility. ------------------------------------------------------------- *The 2015 BIC Travel Award Competition * *When and where? * Monday, May 25th, during the Feindel Brain Imaging Lecture, starting at 1:00 pm in the Grandpr? Also, while multiple members of a lab may compete, there can only be one winner per lab.* *How can I present? * Email anastasia.sares at mail.mcgill.ca or benjamin.gold at mail.mcgill.ca with your title. The duration of the presentations will depend on how many presenters volunteer, but will be less than 15 minutes. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Speaker: Prof. Fr?d?ric Lesage, Department of Electrical Engineering, ?cole Polytechnique Montr?al Location: Macdonald Engineering Building, MD267 Time: 11am-noon Abstract: Using various optical techniques: intrinsic imaging, optical coherence tomography and two photon microscopy, we investigate changes in the brain functional response with age and its relation to microvasculature. We identify brain vessel pulsatility as a contributor to flow mediated dilation and investigate the consequences of these changes on brain oxygenation. Finally, a model of the BOLD response is built from first principles to translate these results to the macroscopic world. _________________________________________________________ "Distribution of Synaptic Vesicles? Speaker: Prof. Jon Sporring, Department of Computer Science, University of Copenhagen Location: McConnell Engineering Building, MC437 Time: 1:15pm - 2:15pm Abstract: Vesicles store neurotransmitters that are released at the synapse for chemical communication between nerve cells. We have analyzed the statistical nature of synaptic vesicle?s location in serial section transmission electron microscope images of rat's brains during stress and sham-stress treatment. Serial section transmission electron microscope imaging poses a particular challenge, since the images have to be reassembled after sectioning in order to study positions in 3 dimensions, and since uncertainty on location is heavily skewed due to uncertainty about the section thickness and due the transmission process, which results in a projection. We propose methods for estimating the thickness of sections by image statistics alone and for fitting parametrized densities in the case of projection. _________________________________________________________ "Geometric Paradigms for MRI Analysis With Applications to Cardioimaging and Neuroimaging? Speaker: Prof. Luc Florack, Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, Eindhoven University of Technology Location: McConnell Engineering Building, MC12 Time: 2:30pm - 3:30pm Abstract: Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a non-invasive and highly versatile imaging modality, with unprecedented capabilities for disclosing in-vivo anatomical and functional information. Imaging protocols as well as image analysis paradigms are traditionally set up so as to convey this information to the radiologist in a format geared towards visual interpretation, supported by software platforms for interactive ?data visualization? and add-ons for quantification of visual structures. The advent of increasingly sophisticated acquisition schemes, producing complex highcodimensional images, prohibits a direct visual approach, calling for a radically new paradigm, with a more compelling role for theory to address notorious inverse problems. Examples of these are ?diffusion weighted MRI? and spatial modulation of magnetization, or ?tagging MRI?. The data produced in these cases are ?non-visual images? that admitquantification and visually exploration (?visual analytics?) only by virtue of an priori axiomatic framework for their interpretation. The necessary axiomatics emerges from the interplay of the physical sciences (mathematics, physics), and often leads to a revaluation of established theories originally developed in a different context. Image researchers worldwide are starting to embrace the new paradigm, trying to ?see what one can understand? rather than trying to ?understand what one can see?. Physics, a rigorous and universal description language, are indispensable in this endeavor. In this presentation I will illustrate the above rationale in the context of a differential geometric framework for the analysis of diffusion and tagging MRI data with ?off-the-shelf? physics and mathematics from early twentieth century. _________________________________________________________ Full details are available on the CREATE-MIA website (http://cim.mcgill.ca/create-mia). By fusing information coming from complementary image modalities, such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT), we can now build comprehensive atlases of the macro and microstructure of the heart. Yet, cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death in the world. For treatment plans to be effective, this extensive amount of information has to be processed in ways that can be useful for clinicians. In particular, the development of better computational tools for the analysis of cardiac images will provide additional support and guidance for cardiac clinicians through measures which are more precise, comprehensive, and deterministic than what is currently achievable. The analysis of cardiac muscle fibers is of particular interest since they play a key role in the mechanical function, electrophysiology and remodeling processes of the heart. Current models of heart wall fibers can be useful from an educational perspective but lack in precision and clinical practicality. In this thesis we develop novel computational tools for the analysis and processing of cardiac fiber data. Each modeled fiber is equipped with an orthonormal frame and its differential geometry is analyzed comprehensively via the method of moving frames. This allows us to go beyond current models of fiber organization, and also provides a rich geometrical interpretation. Methods are developed for estimating a variety of differential descriptors in local neighborhoods based on connection forms of the cardiac frame field, including a finite differencing scheme, an optimization scheme, and a novel closed-form solution. These methods are then applied to a statistical analysis of heart fiber geometry, conducted by studying connection forms of the frame field. Our results corroborate state of the art characterizations of muscle fiber orientation in the heart wall, and also provide a novel geometrical interpretation which has not yet been reported in the literature. In adition, we apply our methods to construct population atlases of cardiac fiber variation, and to completely reconstruct damaged or missing data in cardiac diffusion volumes. Our work could have many practical uses, including a deeper understanding of cardiac structure, the reconstruction of fiber patterns in ventricular restoration and tissue bioengineering, tools for differentiating between normal and pathological tissue, the integration of fiber geometry into patient-specific models, and the monitoring of changes in heart wall structure in studies of cardiac development and aging. > > > -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
