Despite their demonstrable power, there are still many significant questions to consider regarding their effective exploitation in the analysis of biomedical images. For example, objective selection of different models or estimates of parameter uncertainty may facilitate improved interpretability or plausibility. Also, improvements in the efficiency of inference techniques may allow hierarchical, or higher-order models to be tractably inferred upon, reducing the dependence on subjective modelling choices. This special issue will bridge the gap between researchers in computer vision, biomedical image analysis and machine learning by providing a platform for the exploration of probabilistic modeling approaches for difficult clinical problems within a variety of biomedical imaging contexts. Academic Objectives For this special issue, we are looking for original, innovative and mathematically rigorous Bayesian/probabilistic models and inference algorithms that demonstrate clear advantages in terms of accuracy or interpretability over other state-of-art methods in the analysis of medical imaging data. The goal is to encourage novel explorative contributions that may be of a more theoretical nature than those in mainstream medical imaging journals, but are essential for the advancement of modeling and analysis of biomedical imaging data. Topics Authors are invited to submit original research papers and high-quality overview and survey articles on topics including, but not limited to: Methodology * Biologically/physically plausible and realistic generative models, * Model comparison and averaging, * Model uncertainty, * Modelling of multi-modal data, * Probabilistic graphical models, * Efficient inference strategies. Applications Potential applications cover the full scope of biomedical image analysis: * Image segmentation/parcellation, * Image registration/data fusion, * Image reconstruction, * Atlas construction, * Pathological classification, * Longitudinal population analysis, * Cross-sectional population analysis, * Tractography and microstructural modeling, * Disease modelling, * Imaging Genomics, * Functional image modeling. Paper Submission Full papers can be submitted via the online submission system for CVIU (http://ees.elsevier.com/cviu/). Authors must select ?SI: Probabilistic Models? as ?Article Type? in the submission process. Preparation of the manuscript must follow the Guide for Authors, which is available here. The successful candidates will work in the Medical Imaging Lab, under the supervision of Prof. Tal Arbel, and join the Probabilistic Vision Group ? a vibrant research group that works on probabilistic methods in the context of both the fields of computer vision and medical image analysis. This lab is part of the Centre for Intelligent Machines, a world-renowned, interdisciplinary research centre focusing on intelligence systems (www.cim.mcgill.ca). McGill University is located in the beautiful city of Montreal, an exciting, bilingual, multicultural metropolis in the province of Quebec, Canada. > The research projects focus on the development of new probabilistic graphical models for the automatic detection and segmentation of subtle and complex lesions/tumours for a variety of important neurological diseases, such as Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and brain tumours. Through ongoing collaborations with researchers at the Montreal Neurological Institute, and a local medical imaging company, students/fellows will have access to an enormous dataset of real, multicenter, multi-scanner, MS patient MRI (on the order of several thousands), acquired during clinical trials, as well as real, multi-modal brain images acquired from patients with brain tumours, on which to train and test their frameworks. > The candidate must be have previous experience working on problems in the field of computer vision/medical image analysis, with preference given to candidates that have published in top conferences and journals in the field (e.g. CVPR, MICCAI, IPMI, PAMI, TMI, MIA), and those with experience in developing Bayesian/probabilistic frameworks. Candidates must have strong mathematical skills, especially in the area of probability/statistics, have good programming skills (knowledge of C/C++ and OpenCV is preferable, and basic Matlab skills required), and working knowledge and experience in the domain of machine learning. Accepted candidates will be expected to write conference and journal papers, and strong English writing skills will be required. Candidates must have a master degree or equivalent for the Ph.D. position, however strong candidates with a Bachelor?s degree will be considered as candidates for a Master?s degree with the expectation that the student be fast-tracked to a Ph.D. after a year of study. Preference will be given to applicants from top ranking schools, and from well-established groups. Only candidates with strong reference letters will be considered. > Details regarding Ph.D. position: > Successful doctoral candidates will receive an annual stipend of $19,500 CAD/year. However, qualified students will also be eligible for a McGill Engineering Doctoral Award (MEDA) awards, which will increase their stipend to $24K (domestic) or $32K (international). Dr. Feindel?s presence and contribution will be greatly missed at our weekly Brain Imaging Lectures, where he almost always asked the final, most-germane question of the day: one that usually bridged the clinical and research realms, and that brought together the past, the present, and the future of brain science. ------------------------------ Unless otherwise specified, lectures are held on *Mondays at 1:00 pm in the de Grandpr? This international symposium on bilingualism and the brain that will take place at the Neuro on May 28 and 29, 2015 aims to address the neural underpinnings of bilingual brain organization and issues around brain development and plasticity. We will bring together experts from multiple domains of neuroscience to shed light on current views of how experience influences brain function and structure from the developing brain through to old age and how we might understand brain plasticity in health and in disease. There will be two poster sessions and a panel discussion. For more information, to register and/or submit an abstract: www.neuroevents.mcgill.ca We invite you to share the information about the symposium with your colleagues and those that you think might be interested in participating. Thank you very much. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... URL: -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed...
