Orbital Prefrontal Cortex Contributions to Reward-Based Decision Making HOST: Dr. Michael Petrides After postdoctoral work at the NIMH with Mort Mishkin studying the neural substrates of tactual learning and memory, she became a Staff Fellow and then a tenured faculty member within the Laboratory of Neuropsychology, NIMH. Dr. Murray was awarded the Demuth Swiss Medical Research Foundation Award for Young Investigators in the Neurosciences and a PHS Special Recognition Award. Dr. Murray's laboratory is studying the neural basis of learning and memory, including how object and spatial perceptions in the different sensory modalities are formed into memories, how they evoke emotions and motor acts, and how the stored information may be used to plan future actions. Dr. Elisabeth Murray has made major discoveries on how the orbital prefrontal cortex in the monkey makes decisions about the value of objects. See enclosed poster for further information. The Winter-2011 Program of the BIC Lecture Series will feature a number of presentations examining the use of advanced brain imaging techniques to better understand the structure and function of the human brain. The theme for this season's BIC Lecture Series will be "The Cerebral Cortex" -- with many of the lectures being aimed at exploring how different structural and functional imaging techniques are being used to further our understanding of this most incredible structure. Please join us for our seventh lecture of the season, which will be held on Monday, March the 7th, at 1:00 pm in the de Grandpr? Communications Centre of the MNI (3801 University Street, Montreal, QC, H3A 2B4). This lecture will be given by Dr. Ingrid Johnsrude, who will present some of her fMRI evidence for recruitment of cognitive and top-down processes when listening to speech that is difficult to understand. Our next movie in the Neuro Film series is Rain Man (1988). A comedy-drama of an abrasive and selfish yuppie, Charlie Babbitt (Tom Cruise) who discovers that his estranged father has died and bequeathed all of his multimillion-dollar estate to his other son, Raymond (Dustin Hoffman), a man with autism of whose existence Charlie was unaware. Charlie meets Raymond and learns about Raymond's autism, which he initially believes is curable - resulting in his frequent frustration with his brother's antics. Charlie's feelings for his brother evolve during the course of the movie as do his values. The film won four Oscars at the 61st Academy Awards (March 1989), including Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Director and Best Actor in a leading role for Hoffman. Its crew received an additional four nominations. Rain Man will be hosted by Gabriel Leonard, PhD on Thursday, March 24, 2011 (6:30 pm). Dr. Leonard is an Assistant Professor and Clinical Neuropsychologist of the Cognitive Neuroscience Unit of the Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital. He is responsible for coordinating the MNH neuropsychology outpatient service. Gabriel Leonard's research interests include examining the role of the human frontal lobes in monitoring motor output and the breakdown and restoration of effective connectivity in brain disorders in collaboration with Dr. Tomas Paus and the McConnell Brain Imaging Centre. The film will be shown with French sub-titles. Neuro Movie Nights are free and snacks can be purchased (including wraps and popcorn!). All films take place at the Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital, 3801 University street, Jeanne Timmins amphitheatre For more information see: www.neuroevents.mcgill.ca Version en Fran?ais La s?rie de films du Neuro - D?couvrez la science par le cin?ma! The speaker will be Lynn Alden (University of British Columbia), a prominent researcher in the area of cognitive and interpersonal processes in anxiety disorders, particularly Social Anxiety Disorder and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. She is especially interested in integrating interpersonal and cognitive treatments for anxiety. Her main talk is titled "The Danger of Playing it Safe: An Interpersonal Perspective of Safety Behaviours". Abstract: There is growing interest in the role of interpersonal factors in the development and maintenance of the anxiety disorders. Extant research on this topic tends to be descriptive rather than theory-driven. This seminar will present a series of studies on safety behaviours and Social Anxiety Disorder that illustrate how interpersonal theories might be used to broaden our understanding of the interplay between interpersonal and cognitive-behavioural processes and potentially enrich existing treatment strategies for these conditions. There will also be an informal morning seminar (at 10:00-12:00 in room N7/14) titled "An Integrated Interpersonal-CBT Protocol for the Treatment of Social Anxiety" in which Dr. Alden will discuss her experiences with using an integrative therapy that she has developed for Social Anxiety. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Brain Awareness Week is an annual public information campaign created by the Dana Alliance for Brain Initiatives in order to educate the public on the functions of the brain and the importance of brain research. Since 1998, Montreal has participated in BAW by having graduate students from all four Montreal universities volunteer presentations at numerous elementary and secondary educational institutions. The event has earned us considerable praise from the schools visited and from the media, while nearly all the volunteers who participated reported it to be a valuable and enjoyable experience. This year's BAW will be taking place from March 14 to March 20th. Many schools have registered for our presentations and we are currently calling on all students and post-docs to volunteer their time to support this great event during this week. You do not have to prepare the presentation - we will do that for you! All you have to do is pick up the kit with all the information in it and go to the school to give the presentation. Your enthusiasm and desire to teach is invaluable to the success of the BAW campaign. To participate, simply fill out the online form at: http://www.sfn-montreal.ca/baw/volunteer/recruitment.html To learn more about Brain Awareness Week activities, please visit our website at http://www.sfn-montreal.ca/baw If you have any questions, please write to BAWvolunteers at gmail.com and we will answer you quickly. *********************************************************** B?n?voles recherch?s pour la semaine Cerveau en t?te! We ask you spread the news about the APA Science Showcase, a research demonstration program that will take place at the APA Convention in Washington DC, August 4 - 7. We hope the Science Showcase will feature some of the most intriguing and engaging science from our discipline. I am writing to you now to encourage you and your colleagues to consider submitting a demonstration for this program. The Showcase will take place in the Convention Center in an informal learning situation - this will not be set up like a regular session - with up to six different demonstrations on the program over the course of two days. Please identify engaging, stimulating demonstrations that you think will attract and keep an audience. These demonstrations should be only about 15 minutes long, with some additional time for discussion. We expect this will not only help promote our science as a STEM discipline, but also be an enjoyable experience for everyone. The benefits are substantial - not only will you help inform those in attendance about research in our field, you might be singled out as the best of the demonstrations, resulting in a prize of $3,000. In addition, all selected programs will receive support for expenses associated with mounting the demonstrations. Please visit http://www.apa.org/science/programs/science-showcase.aspx for the full program description and application form. The deadline date for submissions is *April 15*, so please don't delay discussing this with your colleagues. Contact the Science Directorate (science at apa.org; 202-336-6000) if you have questions. He works with animals models (rats and monkeys) with a particular emphasis on the fronto-temporal circuitry. The lecture will take place on Friday 25th March, 2011, at 3:30pm in Stewart Biology Building, Room S1/3 (PLEASE NOTE ROOM CHANGE). Title and abstract are below. Title: A cholinergic explanation of dense amnesia Abstract: Acetylcholine is the neuromodulator most closely identified with memory function, primarily because the loss of acetylcholine in patients with Alzheimer's disease tracks the severity of their cognitive impairment. I will review research from my laboratory (and others) that places important constraints on a cholinergic explanation of memory impairment, based on experimental studies in animals in which the cognitive effects of selective ablation of cholinergic neurons can be studied. Specifically, loss of basal forebrain cholinergic neurons cannot account for severe, global memory impairments in neurodegenerative diseases. However, we have recently identified a role for acetylcholine in recovery of function after structural damage to brain circuits important for episodic memory. These recent findings suggest that the involvement of cholinergic deficits in dementia may be related to impairment of a process that would normally allow for some preservation of memory function in the face of structural damage, rather than a direct involvement of acetylcholine in supporting memory per se. The lecture will be followed by a cheese and wine on the 8th floor lobby of the Psychology Department, in Stewart Biology Building. Cheers, Yogita ____________________________ Yogita Chudasama Ph.
